General Comments:
Ana Wentworth is a young woman who has overcome a tragic childhood with her sanity and her female sensibilities very much intact. She is an active, self-reliant person who can manage difficult situations and people with impressive skill. She does not go out of her way to rock the boat, but she will not back down from conflict or new challenges. She does not rebel for the sake of rebelling, but her curious mind, which is open to new ideas, and her adventurous streak, lead her in an unusual direction once she finds the Kama Sutra. She has a great capacity for love, and people who love her typically do so deeply. She is comfortable with all kinds of people. She would rather spend time with interesting people, no matter their origin or social standing. Regardless of what fate throws at her, Ana will prevail because it is her nature to do so. She knows her own mind better than most young women. This causes a gentle, malleable woman like Peggy to instinctively look up to her, and a shallow, bull-headed woman like Charlotte to fear her and want to vanquish her.
A few of Ana’s lines:
“I've come to appreciate that God has an exquisite grasp of timing... and a rare sense of irony.”
“There is no freedom without fortune.”
“What if one of your mares drops a breech foal on our wedding day?”
“His honor will not let him cuckold Roderick. He is half French, you know, but the English half is very honorable.”
“At least Arthur's cage has wings!”
“You know what it’s like to escape a future you don’t want.”
“You were right. This game did end badly.”
“I am done with gilded cages.”

General comments:
Chandan is a highly educated Brahmin, yet a salt-of-the-earth person. In a bad move to save his ancestral property, Chandan incurs a huge debt to a brutal loan shark. Chandan impersonates his guru and flees to London to try to earn some money. The deception takes Chandan to Sealy Manor where he agrees to teach Ana, the family’s beautiful young cousin, the Kama Sutra. Ana’s reasons for learning the Kama Sutra are dubious, but Chandan willingly buys the charade. He even proclaims to be a guru of the Kama Sutra. Chandan is a Brahmin and, hence, celibate. He has no physical knowledge of women. His feelings for Ana begin as physical, become deeply emotional, and ultimately spiritual. When his shenanigan is exposed, Chandan decides to do right by the family and leaves Sealy Manor without payment and without Ana. His selfless act gives Ana the courage she needs to leave Sealy Manor behind. Chandan gets the woman he loves and an honorable position in the family business, thanks to a secret favor he did for the head of the family. And he owes it all to the Sixty Four Arts…of the Kama Sutra.
A few of Chandan’s lines:
“I am quite certain I am a stallion.”
“Perhaps the Kama Sutra cannot be grasped by the Anglo Saxon mind!”
“Without love, you will never find the freedom you seek.”
“You exchange one gilded cage for another!”
“Your purpose is not matrimony; it is beguiling a rich man to bend him to your will.”
“If only you tended to your soul like you tend to your body.” |
Full name: Roderick Sealy, also known as Lord Sealy, or the Duke of Sealy.
Age: 30
Born: March 15, 1857
Zodiac sign: Pisces
Humor: Dry, occasionally sly, appreciates earthy humor but rarely initiates it.
Birth order Oldest son; one younger sister.
Parents: Wealthy aristocrats with immense land revenues from England & India.
Mother: Temperamental, sexually promiscuous, emotionally unreliable.
Father: Intelligent, stoic, the heart and stability of the family but died 7 years ago.
Childhood: Nothing traumatic, mismatched parents made him hesitant about relationships.
Strengths Honest, intelligent, good manners, looks are above average.
Flaws: Lacks confidence with women, trusts people easily, dislikes conflict
Religion: Church of England.
Income level: Very wealthy
Personality: Loves to read. Prefers to be by himself, with his horses, or with few people.
Marital: Single.
Sexuality: On the brink of realizing he is gay.
Looks: Handsome in a pale, blueblood sort of way.
Clothes: He would prefer country tweeds or riding clothes whenever possible.
Drinks: Port before dinner, rarely anything else.
Smokes: Probably not but wouldn’t care if someone else did.
Eats: Not a big eater, but prefers traditional English food, beef and boiled potatoes.
General comments:
Our Duke is a cross between Ashley Wilkes in Gone with the Wind and the Hugh Grant character in Sense and Sensibility. He would happily bury himself at the Sealy Estate as long as he has his books and journals to read, his horses to ride, and a few close friends and family members to socialize with. In spite of his title, a passable education, and tons of money, he is somewhat naïve about the world because he rarely ventures out of his comfort zone at Sealy Manor. He is typically English in his tendency to keep a stiff upper lip regardless of the insanity swirling around him. He’s willing to back down from a conflict with anyone if it helps “keep the peace.” He knows better than most people what his flaws are and doesn’t try hard to conceal them. He has a sense that he is “different” from his father. He’s confused but not tortured by the knowledge. Once he realizes he is gay, he can find a way to accept it because he would be able to accept it in someone else. The Duke is fairly self-contained as a human being. He rarely goes out of his way to find companionship, but when it comes his way, he is suitably gracious. He is the kind of man who becomes more comfortable with himself as he ages. |
Full name: Charlotte Sealy
Age: 25
Born: July 10, 1857
Zodiac sign: Cancer
Humor: Very little, no ability to understand irony or nuance.
Birth order Second child, one older brother
Parents: Aristocrats
Mother: Emotionally unreliable, distant,
Father: Kind, intelligent, but also distant
Childhood: Stable, affluent, but lacking closeness with her brother or parents
Strengths Attention to detail, not afraid of conflict, cold and grasping.
Flaws: Nosy, wants power but no responsibility, greedy, insecure, shallow mind.
Religion: Church of England
Income level: A substantial fortune that allows an upperclass English lifestyle.
Personality: Always grasping at something to fill the void at the center of her being.
Marital: Single
Sexuality: Straight
Looks: Pretty enough, could run to fat in later years.
Clothes: Her love of detail betrays her in fashion, causing her clothes to be too busy.
Drinks: A daily glass of wine, could become a problem in later years.
Smokes: Would smoke if other women smoked; otherwise not.
Eats: Meat and potatoes, sweet tooth.
General comments:
Charlotte is a fundamentally insecure woman who looks to money and objects for comfort. She knows very well her envious place in society, yet her inability to form warm and satisfying relationships with just about everyone has left her with a deep feeling of unease about herself. Her mother’s interests lay outside the home, and she left little Charlotte in the care of servants. Her father loved Sealy Manor as much as her brother does, but he was the type to lose himself in his work and hobbies. When Ana arrived, her curious and intelligent mind made it easy for her to relate to Sir William. Their easy rapport made Charlotte feel like the outsider when she was, in fact, his real daughter. Like a lot of rich people, she’s terrified at the thought of being poor because she’s not sure who she would be without her wealth. Because she’s so afraid of losing everything, always winning has become too important to her, whether it’s money, or a man, or a stupid game of cards. |
Full name: The Duchess of Sealy (Irene)
Age: 49
Born: May 10, 1830
Zodiac sign: Taurus
Humor: Earthy
Birth order Probably one of several children, middle of the pack
Parents: Aristocrats
Mother: Stylish, preferred London
Father: Outdoorsman, preferred country
Childhood: Stable, affluent, given a lot of free rein
Strengths Knows herself, comfortable with people she likes
Flaws: Too carnal, emotionally abandons children and husband for lovers,
Religion: Church of England
Income level Affluent aristocrat
Personality: Lives life on her own terms, wants to come and go as she pleases
Marital: Single
Sexuality: Straight
Looks: Born a natural beauty, still sexy in her 40s.
Clothes: Well-dressed but not a clotheshorse like Charlotte.
Drinks: Drinks freely but not considered a drunk.
Smokes: Occasionally
Eats: Enjoys food, but her vanity keeps waistline in check.
General comments:
Irene probably would have been happier to live on her own in her 20s instead of taking on a marriage and family at 19, but in those days women had few career options. She probably married a man 15 years her senior who turned her on physically but couldn’t, over time, sustain the kind of sexual attention that thrilled her in the first few years. So, while her growing children were looking to her for attention, she was looking to other men for gratification. Unlike her daughter Charlotte, Irene has never had a problem attracting men and making friends with them. She has a down-to-earth quality in spite of her glamour that makes her popular, especially with men. And she likes them and sees no reason to live like a nun just because her husband has a busy life. |
Full name: Arthur DeLessups
Age: 28
Born: 1849
Zodiac sign: Scorpio
Humor: Droll
Birth order Eldest
Parents: Aristocrats
Mother: Stylish, preferred London
Father: Urban gentleman with French blood.
Childhood: Stable, affluent, given a lot of free rein.
Strengths: Knows himself, beautiful manners
Flaws: Selfish, no ambition

Marital: Single
Sexuality: Bisexual
Looks: Strikingly handsome.
Clothes: Elegant, wears them well.
Drinks: On appropriate occasions.
Smokes: As a social custom.
Eats: Small appetite for a man.
General comments:
Arthur’s good looks and beautiful manners make him a welcome guest in any home. He is not a deep fellow as life has come too easily to him, but he’s deep enough to recognize authentic people when he meets them. He is a bisexual, who is spite of the time and place, feels no angst about his sexual appetites. He tends to reflect back the personalities he is in the presence of. When he is with Ana or Chandan, his character deepens and qualities like honesty and courage reveal themselves more. When he is with Charlotte, he sinks to her level of shallowness because it’s too much effort to fight it. He is most comfortable with Roderick, because they have so much in common and because he truly loves him.

| Devi is a child of fate. Of Anglo-Indian ancestry, she finds herself stranded alone in England while still a very young woman. As a "half-caste" living in England in Victorian times, she is not fully accepted by either Indian or English society. Like Ana, the heroine, she has no parents and no fortune. She survives by acting as a confidant and spiritualist to wealthy English matrons. Her devastating beauty and over-the-top sex appeal gives her unusual power over men and she's not afraid to use it, for business or pleasure. She is not a moral woman because she cannot afford to be. As a pragmatic survivor and opportunist, she uses her God-given gifts to obtain the security, companionship and comfort that fate has denied her. |
